I bought it once and used it in a pot roast recipe. it turned into a good gravy, but I didn't much like the beer itself. I'm not really into dark beers.

Well I'm just now getting into Beer. For a while I was just a Vodka, Tequila, Goldschlager type of guy. I just recently started drinking Beer...so I'm trying out different ones.
I don't know what you have available in NC, but a couple to check out might be Sierra Nevada Pale Ale or Fat Tire. I have boundless suggestions, but most of them are local only. h:

That's a pretty poor excuse for a dark beer (Michelob Amber Bock that is). Bock is just the bottom of the vat tailings that are left over from a season of brewing, you need a good product in the beginning to make a good bock.
