Hell yeah, a European market diesel econobox can do 75 mpg stock... throw electric hybrid in the mix, you're looking at 100+mpg, no tricks.

add a turbo diesel hybrid plug-in and that car would get crazy gas milage in the southwest. not to mention they are working on making carbon fiber way more affordable, and there is a form of graphite they are working on that is close to carbon fiber. if they get the weight down on the cars that will help out a ton as well. as long as the car companies can offer a car with a decent range and a fun to drive factor hybrid/alternative energy cars will catch on.

The problem is that the cars of tomorrow != to the cars of today- too many safety standards
If one really wishes to make an impact they have to make it a trike/bike design and then build around that- this way they can make use of the lax bike laws to make lightweight passenger vehicles- at least for a start
