computer experts v.dead laptop
laptop died last week, reformat didnt work, anyone want to help me out?
im doing research but i dont know shit about this kind of stuff besides how to reformat
details can be posted if anyone would like to help
sidenote: can an old as dirt windows me machine handle a simple htpc setup?

toshiba sattelite m45-s169 +1gig ram
last week it locked up and i had to do a hard reset, remove battery and unplug power cable
loaded up to a black screen, sat there for a while, finally got back into windows, slow as balls, locked back up, repeats as above
reformat, update to xp sp3, update all other basic crap
slow as balls, freezes after about 15 minutes
now it sits at a black screen for a few hours, sometimes power cycles randomly and sometimes gives me a windows logo and then resets
currently:
from off
turn on, power light turns on, battery light turns on, power cable light turns on, processor light remains off, wifi light remains off
sits for a few hours, no harddrive spinup, processor fan does turn on
after a few hours the processor light comes on, hard drive spins, and wifi turns on
sits at black screen for a while, sometimes resets, sometimes tries to load windows, sometimes gets into windows then freezes
its been sitting with all its lights on and a black screen all day today and nothing so far
i have gotten a few cmos errors on bootup but they occured after a hard reset so im not sure its related at all really
thats about it, i dont know shit about hardware issues so im stuck here

came with 512mb, i added another 1gig stick
i tried pulling either card and reseting, no dice, do i need to do a shutdown startup to initialize anything each time to see if ram is the problem?
way to check either mobo or cpu?

did you try putting either ram module into both sockets with the other out?
obviously the laptop needs to be off, unplugged, battery out when you swap the ram and yes, boot it up to test after you place module 1 in socket 1, then same procedure, module 1 in socket 2, etc for module 2 in sockets 1 and 2.
depending on age if its mobo or cpu you might as well buy a new one.
