yeah...i was just trying to say, for your local LAN (if it's a flat network), you dont need a gig router as long as you have a gig switch. pretty much the only place you are going to see gig routers are ISPs. but you can buy multilayer switches at a much cheaper price, except then your only option is ethernet or fiber handoff.

anyway..not that all this matters, jae will be fine as long has he has gig switch and every device has gig nic

Cat6 is a lot faster(10x by what I see, I can't remember the real number) and is rated from 550mbs, whereas cat5e is 350mbs.
I'm trying to find the differences between cat6 and cat6e but I can't find them.
difference between cat6 and cat5e is the number of twists per foot and shielding thickness (the plastic jacket, the shielding does not mean it's shielding from EMI) it's the number of added twists per foot that allows it to be certified for slightly higher theoretical through put

cat 5e is fine for gigabit..... if the price difference isnt huge, get cat6.

you dont need 2k8 for a media server.

If you have a ton of patience and willing to learn, then there are several linux distros that would make perfect media servers.

All I have is Cat 6 and Cat 6e. They only sell that at my book store now. 25' for less than 10. 50 for, I think, 11 or 12

yeah in our new office building we were going to wire it with cat6 but the installers wanted more money because they are a bitch to install. we plan on getting new phone system with power through the ethernet which is why we wanted cat 6 but cat 5e will do for now.
