near miss landing attempt of airliner
that's some good piloting right there. probably saved 100+ lives. I recall seeing a video of a BUFF B-52 landing in bad cross wind. the nose of the plane was about 20degree off to the right of the run way. it landed safely. the plane has special landing gears that can offset that much (maybe more) just for these kinds of conditions.

Fair point, assuming all the runways are on the same heading and you can't divert anywhere else. 
When Burbank has a sustained crosswind like that, they can switch the pattern over so planes are landing either with the wind or as near as they can get to it.
