that's some good piloting right there. probably saved 100+ lives. I recall seeing a video of a BUFF B-52 landing in bad cross wind. the nose of the plane was about 20degree off to the right of the run way. it landed safely. the plane has special landing gears that can offset that much (maybe more) just for these kinds of conditions.

i'm sure the x-wind wasn't as bad when they first started their approach (which can be up to 3miles away)

Fair point, assuming all the runways are on the same heading and you can't divert anywhere else.

When Burbank has a sustained crosswind like that, they can switch the pattern over so planes are landing either with the wind or as near as they can get to it.

Actually, planes begin their approach about 15 miles out. By the 10th mile marker they should be on the glideslope.
