best way to hookup pc to receiver?
my computer has 5.1 since I see 5 different 3.5mm audio ports from the back.
right now I just split the main audio cable (green)to the computer speakers and the receiver by using an rca left and right adapter and a 3.5mm splitter.
problem is I don't get surround sound. im not sure if its the videos I downloaded (720p rips) or if its my setup. does anybody know if video files like mkv support 5.1 surround?

most of my 720p mkv files have 5.1
you cant get full 5.1 from just the green connection.... the green is the front channels only.
do you know what brand soundcard you have?
scenario 1: use an optical or digital-coax connection to the receiver. (but your card needs to have digital out)
scenario 2: use 3 sets of RCA-to-miniplugs to the receiver. (but the receiver must have analog 5.1 connections)

sound comes from motherboard so no digital out. hmm....so i have to convert all the 3.5mm's to rcas?....ill have to check my receiver when i get home, hopefully it has the inputs for multiple rcas on dvd mode.

Hey, not sure how much you were looking to spend, but I am running optical out through this sound card to my HTIB. 5.1 and 5.1 dts both work as expected. (99 bucks)

you'll just be sending stereo signals to all the inputs and that will be get you the surround sound effect. if you just want sound out of all the speakers you can do that, but if you want surround sound then you have to get a new sound card or if your receiver has a prologic surround sound emulator then you can use that setting. it basically takes a stereo signal and tries to emulate surround sound. personally i don't like it at all and only use it if i'm forced to.
