Which format will prevail over time... HDDVD or Blu-Ray? v.Poll#2
Blu Ray is supported by Sony Pictures Entertainment,MGM, Disney, 20th Century Fox, and Lionsgate. They also have much stronger support for their players: Apple Inc., Dell, Panasonic, Hitachi, LG, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, and Sony (PS3 is a HUGE factor)
I just don't see HD-DVD pulling out the win. It is inferior technology and really only has the name going for it.

In terms of major studios in North America, HD DVD is currently exclusively backed by Universal Studios (including subsidiaries Focus Features and Rogue Pictures), Paramount Pictures (including Paramount Vantage, Nickelodeon Movies, MTV Films, DreamWorks Pictures and DreamWorks Animation), The Weinstein Company (including Dimension Films), and First Look Studios.
HD DVD Promotion Group Member List contains the main promoters of HD DVD, namely Toshiba, NEC, Sanyo, Microsoft, RCA, Kenwood, Intel, Venturer Electronics and Memory-Tech Corporation. The HD DVD format is also non-exclusively supported by Acer, HP, Hitachi Maxell, LG, Lite On, Onkyo, Meridian, Samsung,[33] and Alpine.
obviously not (well, not yet) seeing as they're dead last in the current console war..
well, that is the point of a game console. the very last thing on my mind when i buy one is what it supports for movies.
point is, it's still too close to tell and i, like many other people, am still waiting for the dust to settle.

Sony owning Blu-Ray and incorporating the functionality into a gaming system, thus defaulting PS3 owners as potential Blu-Ray customers.
Instead of getting swept up in a hardware race, the 360 focused on online gaming and delivering titles.
Sony was / is too busy trying to defuse the image of "being too expensive". They still can't shake it considering they're only $50 more than the Xbox.
(360 Prem $350, 40GB PS3 $400)
(360 Elite $450, 60GB PS3 $500)
Part of the reason I will inevitably choose the PS3 over the XBox is because I play video games once in a while...but I am a HUGE movie fan. Therefore the Blu-Ray functionality is 90% of what pulls me to the PS3 and away from the XBox 360.
Exactly...
And I don't really understand all the hype about Halo. I played the first one and thought it was sub par. Combine that with the horrible XBox controls and I just don't see the appeal. IMO part of the reason that PS2 destroyed Xbox is because the controls are so much more ergonomic.

The Xbox launched at $299 (1 week before the GameCube, $199). At the time, the PS2 was $199.
Nobody wanted to pay $300 for a console and games they never heard of.
Also, the Microsoft image was trashed. They were in the peak of their anti-trust lawsuits.
The Halo became a smash.
The online service rocketed into popularity.
Halo 2 made consoles scarce.
But, Halo and Halo 2 couldn't combat multiple Final Fantasy's and Gran Turismos.

In the end, i think HD DVD will winout simply b/c of the name. Many of our parents just don't get that Blu Ray is just another high def format, and think they need HD DVD to watch DVDs on their High Def TV. Plain and simple.
I however do not feel that either will die out.
