Getting into Canada....
ive never needed 2 ids to get into canada... but they always ask for my drivers license coming back into the US.
usually when i get to the gate at canada, they just ask me a few questions like why the hell am i trying to get into canada and am i carrying any contraband.

Well they can ask you for 2 IDs. in anycase who doesnt carry 2 ids anywais?
It'd be better if you have a passport....trust me....a lot less problems coming into Canada and coming back to the US.

If you are driving or walking across all you need is your driver's license and possibly a birth certificate. If you are flying across the imaginary line you will need a passport. If you take a train or a boat/ship I don't know what you need.

The other date, which is when the WHTI will require citizens to present a passport when crossing the Canadian border by land or water, is yet to be determined. The deadline for the changes to take place, however, is June 1st, 2009.

currently they have yet to set a date for requiring passport. It's still the same its always been unless you are flying. right now thats the only way you need a passport.
Getting into canada is the easiest part. I go a couple times a year, and just went a couple months ago, all we ever have to do is show the drivers license of every person in the vehicle or some form of ID. lots of times they do nothing more than look at them then hand them back.
You get more scrutiny coming BACK into the US than going into canada. Coming back we always get asked a million questions, but in the last 5 years i can only remember one time that we had to show anything more than our drivers license to re-enter.
We always take our birth certificates with us just in case though. Just remember be polite, answer all the questions without any attitude and you will be fine.
Sometime in 2008 / early 09 you will start needing a passport to cross the border, but currently again thats not a requirement.
