okay, so I did some more digging and found the article on about.com

US Citizens Visiting Canada by Land or Water

The other date, which is when the WHTI will require citizens to present a passport when crossing the Canadian border by land or water, is yet to be determined. The deadline for the changes to take place, however, is June 1st, 2009. The deadline was previously January 1, 2008.

editing your quote and then replying with it in quotations marks FTL.

if you don't mind could you ask them how it went? Is it just like a checkpoint where they check my info, ask a few questions and then I move on, or do I have to get out of the car and fill out crazy paperwork?

You won't have to get out of the car unless they want to search your shit (really doubt it), they usually just see some id or some shit, ask you were you're going, what you're gonna do, how long you're gonna be there. Stuff like that.

most of the time they don't even stop you, they just waive you through. If you do have to stop they will ask for all parties in the car to present government photo ID and a birth certificate or Passport. Then keep on truckin into Canada.

2 IDS if you going by car.

The passport is only needed if you fligh in.

In 2008 you will need a passport if your coming in by land.

ive never needed 2 ids to get into canada... but they always ask for my drivers license coming back into the US.

usually when i get to the gate at canada, they just ask me a few questions like why the hell am i trying to get into canada and am i carrying any contraband.
