Xbox One Crew w. big enises ... Halo MCC HYPE THREAD! (est. 2007)
I think I mentioned to some that I recently found a very first generation Xbox 360 (Zephyr) at the GoodWill Store for $12. I powered it up to find out that it was RRoD'd. Here's my next XBox adventure ...
Arctic Silver thermal paste + component cleaner + new hardware

2nd generation VPU heatsink

5. Arcade - 90nm, 90nm - needs repair

The updated heatsink arrived today and I was able to execute this guide:
http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/repair...-clamp_fix.htm
The RROD is caused by 2 things:
1. The "X-Clamp" that holds the heatsinks to the chips are overly tight. With the heat generated, the clamp pressure causes the GPU's solder tracks to sever.
2. The OEM thermal paste is applied way too thick. Because it's so caked on, it traps more heat than dispensing it.
3. General cooling issues.
Pressure + bad cooling + bad connections to the bad cooling = rrod.
Sorry for not making it to the gangbang last night. Hopefully y'all will be around tonight.
Fixed the RRoD'd 360 yesterday, then flashed it using "JungleFlasher.0.1.70.Beta x64" and "iXtreme 1.61". All went well and now the thrift store machine is fully working / hacked. For those interested in doing this, it's NOT hard at all.
Thinking I was hot shit, I offered to flash my brother's machine (exact same setup as the machine above). Yep, the flash went perfectly, but wouldn't read a damn disc (original & copy). It ended up being a combination of hardware & firmware failure. The firmware bumps the max read speed to 12x. My brother's DVD rom has some wear on it, so the 12x read speed ended up making things worse. I had to find an older firmware (1.41, 8x), reflashed ... boom, magic.
If anyone has a Toshiba/Samsung MS25 or MS28 DVD rom, I'll coach ya through the flash process if you're interested. Note: the system modded shouldn't be your Xbox Live machine. After the mod, I strongly suggest keeping the machine offline and for playing copies only.

last round of hardware updates ...
before:

This is identical to what I have now. I thought upgrading the GPU heatsink would be good enough.
soon to be after:

This is what's in the Falcon (65nm gpu, 90nm cpu). The CPU has a monstrous brick for a heatsink. So, I ordered 2 heatsinks. (One for newly repaired 360, one for the still busted Elite)
Next up, the XCM Core Cooler V2.

I ordered 2 of these also.
I'm going to make sure the systems in my possession (that are out of service contract) are bullet proof.
