I just did a little. The oil consumption issues I believe are mainly in the early 2000 M5's. And most are saying with the proper maintenance, they will easily hit 200k.

I think, but don't quote me on this, that BMW changed the ringlands and gap clearance specs on 2001+ M5's due to this issue.

The holes are for intake. I don't remember but I think it was Hammon (sp?) that offered those.

Also it does not use a dry sump, it's semi dry sump and that is not why it uses 8qts. My M coupe uses 7.2qts and it doesn't even have a semi dry sump. Even a stock 3series will use 7qts of oil.

Lastly engine rebuild are common at 100K miles? no it's not. 200K is easily attainable with regular maintenance like coolant flush, oil change, timing belt tensioner replaced at the recommended intervals.

S62 is about the most solid M engine to come out of BMW since the S52. Its nearly indestructible. My friend has a 2001 with a S/Cer putting down nearly 500hp and it is his daily driver.

^Good info. I'm just a little weary of the gas mileage. Theres a huge gap between city driving and highway.

Oh oil changes will be expensive because the engine uses 0W-60 which right now you can only buy from the dealer for 8-10/qt but it is full synth so the change intervals are 15K.

The good news is that it wont take any more than 15mins to change the oil and filter and you can do it in a tux. All you need is a oil extractor and the oil filter is right on top of the engine

That's a definite negative. I picked up Mobil 1 5W-20 for the Civic yesterday at Walmart and they had 0W-60 available for $36.45 (5 quarts).

Maybe what you said only pertains to California.
