the 350's tranny/shifter isn't the greatest, the S2k while cool isn't really a practical DD for most.
I wouldn't suggest another BMW, or an Audi for that matter... VW is also out... I'd be looking in the direction of a WRX or Legacy with the manual transmission. both are fantastic on gas, and if you can get either with the 6-speed (spec. b 06+ or STi) you'll be golden.

I just got my dad a 94 accord sedan ex with only 101k miles with ALL work done at a honda dealer with receipts including timing belt/water pump. He had it for 12 yrs and was adult driving and supplied me a folder with all the maintainance done for only $3200.

It drives perfect, a/c is cold and everything is good. I just changed the air filter since it been about 10k miles since he last done it and plugs/wires since he said it was done around 50k.
