I've seen a couple of those 02-03 (some 04s) going for that much. I like them, although the rear is a bit tight to sit in for a four door.

+1 on IS300.

rico, he's considered an s2k and 350z, rear seating shouldnt matter at all

the IS is a brick. From what I've been hearing (aka various magazine articles, consumer reports, etc), it's rock solid.

previous generation leases are coming back, so a good price can be found.

I think it's a 200hp, 6, so gas should be around the 25 mpg range

and there are loads of parts for it. It looks a bit dated, but I'm sure the overall ride quality + fun factor should help you get over it.

the 350's tranny/shifter isn't the greatest, the S2k while cool isn't really a practical DD for most.

I wouldn't suggest another BMW, or an Audi for that matter... VW is also out... I'd be looking in the direction of a WRX or Legacy with the manual transmission. both are fantastic on gas, and if you can get either with the 6-speed (spec. b 06+ or STi) you'll be golden.
