Compared to a small displacement inline 4 cyl....yeah, it's big and heavy. As for choosing it, there are a SHITLOAD of parts for the 302. The aftermarket scene is ridiculous....parts are cheap, and it's cheap to make it go fast. I still want a foxbody gt/lx as a project car.

To add to what Dub said it also is a high rev motor kind of like the Chevy 327 is to the 350. so not only can you squeeze mad power out on a budget but you can (with a lot of work) wrap that sucker up to the 10k range and not blow the piss out of it.
