thinking about getting an E36 m3 (95-99)
Yep, you gotta pay to play with this one. I agree completely that the 2000 E46 328i w/sport package I had was a blast to drive. But it was in the shop ALOT. As soon as the warranty was up I traded it for my current ride, G35.
I would strongly suggest looking at a used G35 instead.

sorry, but any car I own (unless someday I can afford more than one) has to have 4+ doors (still want that wagon some day).

Nissan sucks much less than that overpriced kraut mobile
On a scale of sucky-ness 1-10, with Honda being a perfect 10 for complete lack of suckage and Kia being a 1 total ownage of all things sucky I would have to say that BMW (Broke My Wallet) is a 4 for pretty sucky while the the Infiniti is an 8 for much less likely to suck.
Opinions may vary.....
You go get your crappy M3 and I'll smile at you in my rear view and wave at you when I pass the auto repair center.

It's not that it's such a maintainance queen, it's the cost of it.
Brakes/rotors alone cost you $300 for regular parts. Struts/shocks cost you another 300-400 when it comes to replacing.
If you do get one, be sure to check out the electrical. It's hard to diagnose once you have electrical problems.
I have fun driving the car, prefer it much over most hondas, s2000 are good in handling, but no torque.
(I own an e36 for the last 4 years or so)

Airbag light x 4, rear differential twice, VANOS unit replaced several times, leaked water around the creaky door seals, etc. etc. It's been a while and I am still sore about it. I was stationed in Germany and my wife and I bought it as our first new car. Dream car. Nothing like picking up a brand new BMW and hitting the autobahn with it.
I still have fond memories of the car, while it was working. I also knew all of the mechanics by first name too. It was a terrible dissapointment and BMW, as a company, basically told us to take a flying leap. So we did. To another, better brand!
