Anyone have mechanic shop experience?
I know a lot of us have the DIY experience when it comes to working under the hood. But how many of you guys have worked for a shop at one point or another. I'm not positive how much experience you need to apply for a place like Firestone or Goodyear but I think I would want to do something like that as a summer job next year. Did they require a certain kind of experience?
check what ur state requires for certification...normally u have to take a state test for each area you want to be qualified to work in. sadly alot of places will hire you if you can pass the state test which isnt saying much for most states
No state test needed for working on cars unless you want to be a smog technician or want your brake and lamp license.
I'm a Lexus tech
I would hate to have to work at places like jiffycrap or Fireshit because of the fact that you need to know a lot about every car and have twice as many tools than you would need to work on a specific make.

I've worked at a Honda dealership and a couple all-make shops. VA doesn't require any special tests unless you want to do state inspections or emmissions testing.
For an oil bitch job, DIY experience on your own car is usually good enough.

I worked for Mitsu for a year, and left there to go to school.. My friend works at Firestone - Too lazy to attempt to go to school, and settled for Firestone for the rest of his life. Its shitty work, long hours, and average pay. Hes 22 now, i'm 18, and I will be making more than him allready just out of school next year. For a summer job, I say try it out.. It stops being fun REAL quick though. They dont usually require experience, if your a n00b you'll start out as a G.S. doing oil changes and patching tires. Then start taking your ASE tests, and as your pay raises due to them, so does your work load - you'll start doing regular work on cars and yada yada it snowballs up to being a regular tech. Just go for your ASEs if you do decide to go work at a shop.
