That isn't necessarily true. The parents may say you had you're chance kid, but you fuk'd up. Here's a bus pass for your ass.

Hell, I didn't even have a car in high school. Not cause my family couldn't afford it, but because my dad didn't think a kid with so little experience behind the wheel should have a car at his leisure. He was probably right. But if I did have a car and crashed it, I guarantee it would have been an ass whoopin'.

Well, if 16 isn't the right age to give you kid a car so he/she can start learning, than what age is? The longer you wait to teach a kid something, the farther behind they will be from every other kid whose parents hook them up. When I tuned 16 in 2000, my dad gave me an 89' camry. Yeah there were times when I beat the piss out of it. Sure, there were times when I had near collisions. But that's why you give your kid a junker and not a $30k+ car to learn with.

agreed, my first car was a 94 tempo that had 200000 on it. she was a beater but reliable, i got it 2 weeks before i turned 16. a car is an excellent way of teaching responsibilty and the first step to going from a child to an adult. also helped my dad used to have me drive into town to pick him up stuff when i was only 14....just hadn me the keys and tell me what he needed....even saw cops and they just wave. advantages of small town, and it helped alot when i got my license and first car

Yeah, I started driving to school when I was 15. It was only about 2 miles away, but it was a good learning experience.

10 miles in, 10 miles out, 14, full size pickups...company vehicles...dads convertible...yea i look back and realize the trouble i coulda been in, the trouble my dad coulda been in, and i really appreciate the level of trust he had in me. granted i was out drivin around the farm in trucks at the age of 7, drivin the tractor by 8 and could safely drive a stick by 10 except for the height issues.

I'm not arguing that 16 isn't an appropriate age to start driving, but not all 16 year olds are ready to have the responsibility of having their own car. I didn't get my own car till I was 18, and I think I caught up just fine. Junker or not, there are still liability issues that a parent will be responsible for. Yeah, true I could have as easily gotten into an accident driving my parents car, but it's limiting potentially dangerous exposure. I've been hit by a 16 yo who had their license for 3 months and decided to run. Guess what, her parents called me for 2 weeks begging me to call off my insurance, even though it was out of my hands at that point.
