i used to be one of the ones who said the same thing about the homeless all the time as well. but honestly man you cant look at it that way. think about most of these homeless, they are in the city cuz thats the only place they get help now, farms are well in farmland....kinda hard for them to get to work see. granted now if someone started a program to help the homeless get these jobs i guarantee that it would be a good idea. but theres a lot going against most of these homeless. it isnt always because they are just lazy. usually there is something wrong that get them to this point in life.

i agree w/ both. ive talked to a few homeless people who ended up that way b/c of The Man screwing them over. unemployment, screw ups w/ social security, layoffs, etc. not that this is the norm, which is why i agree to both of you h:

but doh! lazy americans!!!

i will def cede the point that there is a large population of lazy bums and lazy americans out there, and unfortently they tend to believe they arent lazy. those are the worst ones out there, the ones who have the attitude, hey im not punched in i dont have to answer that or do that, or hey im not working today so screw it. dude your job is a big part of who u are, man up and show pride regardless of being payed or not.

i dont know how many times ive put 50-60 hours in and then gone in on a sat to get something for car and wind up spending another 4 or 5 hours helping people cuz they were busy and i couldnt bear to see customers get unhappy, all the while not being payed. my biggest pet peeve is those that say it aint my job or im off the clock. dude ur never off the clock as far as im concerned. 2 am someone calls and they are a good customer of mine and need something, im on my way in.

sry for the rant, i just do really hate those who dont take pride in what they do.

this problem will force innovation. it happened back in the 60s with tomato pickers. it happed after slavery ended with the cotton fields, and the cotton gin was invented. someone will find a way to make a machine that will do the work faster and cheaper that a human can. the only reason they use people is because its cheap now. give it 5 years and they will have machines out in the fields doing what people used to do. innovation is the American way, you over come challanges. The price of produce will not go up drastically, the thing that cost the most with produce is transportation cost. considering gas prices have dropped we shouldn't see a major change in produce.

As a teenager i would have much rather worked at a farm than retail, but I also worked on a farm as a preteen.

alot of product the other reason they use people still is machines inability for delicacy on such large scale i believe....like are machines really going to be able to pick strawberries, or rasberries, and define which ones are truly ripe and which arent.
