More than likely you went to an affiliate store.
If you do not have insurance, they charge you $55 for a phone exchange.
If your phone is within the manufacturer's warranty, you can mail it to them and they can fix it.
Ultimately anyone with a cell phone should have insurance, kind of oversight on your part there.

Be professional and call them. Call customer service and explain to them that reception is very poor in your area. You feel ripped off because you are paying for service that you are not getting. You have already upgraded the software or firmware. You have already taken it in for inspection. You have done everything you can, but you still dont get the service that you are paying for. They probably wont be able to do much. Tell them you want to talk to someone who can help you. Tell the same story to the supervisor. Repeat about 3-4 times in a couple week's period so they have it logged on their end. And eventually I got more agressive, but still remained professional and respectable...and they told me I can cancel the contract that had more than a few months still in it.
Or...I think you can change the billing address to somewhere where there is no coverage from them. Then they have to terminate it. YMMV.

I've had Sprint for over 10 years (with a 1 year period where I switched to Verizon). I usually get a cheap phone but they work (and keep them for at least 2-3 years) - I also take care of the phone too and don't run the battery to it's lowest level but always keep it charged.
Problems I've had w/ Sprint:
- I get about 1 dropped call every year (so no problem there)
- I dropped my phone and cracked the display once and brought it into an affiliate store and they wouldn't help me without me getting a new phone or buying insurance on what was a free phone. I went to a Sprint store which was further away but they had some phones that were traded in of my model and offered to switch me to them for $10 (processing fee, etc.) and I had no problem.
Problems I've had with Verizon
I had Verizon for a year and had so much problems with it. They were supposed to work in the DC Metro tunnels but never did as you'd get at the most 1 bar. I would be roaming in downtown DC for some calls but didn't notice until the screwed up bills came to me and had to go through these powerless customer service 3rd parties that did diddly sh!t. I threatened to quit and they threatened the ETF. So I wrote a customer complaint to BBB and to corporate Verizon saying I'm fed up with their service and billing. They said I was bound to my contract and complaining to BBB would do nothing as they really don't care about their rating as no one checks it anymore. So I had a friend send me an offer letter from India and a fake air itinerary to note that I was moving to India to take a job and needed to cancel my contract as they did not have service there. That went through and I never went back to Verizon and cancelled my landline service with them (they were Bell Atlantic). I got Sprint again and have used it for the past 4 years as my main phone.

I've never had any bad experiences with Verizon. I had tons of bad experience with Sprint, and Cingular.
