Default Question about insurance.

So my little brother just got his license, and we were wondering if we had to do anything with the insurance company. We were just going to let him drive to and from school.

as long as there are no restrictions on the vehicles, i think you'll be ok since hes not a primary driver on any vehicles.

primary or not, he still needs to be listed on the vehicle driven.

even if he drives a friend's car, he still needs proof of insurance on anything

The way I understood the thread, they aren't buying a new car. The kid is driving an already owned vehicle. Insurance is with the car, not the driver. His friend doesn't have to have his name listed on his policy for him to be able to drive the car and be insured. The proof of insurance will be in the car in his parents name.

not sure how it is from state to state, so that's where we might be getting different ideas. :run:

in IL ...

1. You need to be listed on your daily driver. (primary or secondary)
2. If the car you're driving is borrowed (from a friend), you need to have proof of insurance on any vehicle.

Over here, they don't insure only the car ... they gauge rates on the driver first based on the following factors:
1. age
2. primary or secondary driver
3. the car itself

even though the kid wont be a primary driver of any car, the fact that he is in the household and will be operating a car, even "occasionally", the kid must be listed in the policy as a driver. also, insurance is for the car AND the driver. the reason why a lot of people have the misconception that its just for the car and not the person is that the order of insurance priority goes as follows: car first, then driver.

when this is important, is during an accident, the insurance holder on the car is first liable for damages, and then anything above and beyond that, the driver's insurance is liable. if the driver is the insurance holder for the car, then whatever the policy limits are, thats that.

just to help make things clear...

car insurance rates are based upon mainly:

1. person's driving record (this includes any violation/accidents AND years experienced)
2. type of coverage/limits on vehicle
3. type of vehicle
4. location of garaging address (this may not apply to all states)
