I can register it as non-operational...but if you don't do that and don't pay your registration, they assume that you are still operating the vehicle without having paid the registration. So, they send notice after notice, then eventually they send it to collections...which is bad for your credit.

I think for now I'm going to register it non-operational, pay my $16 fee and hope it goes away forever. If the guy tries to register it, his problem.

it would bother me having to keep anything under my name that i don't own anymore.

i just don't get why they can't take your name off of it. i mean, what were to happen if you blew the engine and dumped the thing in a junkyard? would you still have to have it registered under your name? or is that the same thing as the non-operational?

it also surprises me that they can't do something like lilrexen described.

did you talk to him on your cell phone? maybe you can look up old phone bills and find his number on there (they usually have incoming and outgoing numbers).

why do you have to register an off road vehicle? Here you just have to have it titled, which I don't think is even required except to prove ownership.

Are they really making you continue registering it?/

certain state off-road parks require vehicles to be registered and insured.

There's a different classification and release for things that have been junked. I believe it has to be certified as salvaged or non repairable.

I think it was all done through email...and I deleted all the emails from various people asking about it when it was on CL.

the same thing happened when we gave my last car to Goodwill over a year ago. About a month ago we got a notice that the car was towed and that we could actually go get it if we wanted to before it went to auction. Apparently the guy registered it but never had the title changed so we were still the official owners of it! Luckly we weren't responsible for it though so it doesn't really matter.

You live in a fucked up state if they let you register a car without having the title in your name :eh:
