I wouldn't get a mattress per se, but one of those thermarest pads. I would also get separate sleeping bags.
I don't know how the rules are in your area, but in California, you are required to carry bear proof food canisters. You can rent one at REI or EMS if you don't want to shell out the $70 for it.

if your going in areas with bears take rope and put your food up in a tree is the ebst way to do it. since your not backpacking and just camping i suggest u take a tarp and put it under your tent otherwise your brand new tne make get a hole in it from a stick and more importantlly that extra insulation to the ground is wonderful if it's cold or raining

Idiot! Bears can climb trees!
I'd say keep the food in your tent! Hide it under your pillow so that way the bears could hardly smell it. And if they DO happen to smell it then they'd have to wake you by moving you first, therefore waking you up and you could yell at them and scare them away.

No shit... any kid who even watched Yogi Bear knows about hanging it in the tree. I was fucking around lol. Plus hes my best friend so I thought it funny having him mauled by a bear in his sleep, while he had his food supply under his head.
