I'd say keep the food in your tent! Hide it under your pillow so that way the bears could hardly smell it. And if they DO happen to smell it then they'd have to wake you by moving you first, therefore waking you up and you could yell at them and scare them away.
Speaking of idiots You are one as well. Hanging food supplys from a branch on a tree is the best way to keep bears out of your food supplies.
