The Xterra is the only SUV I would ever consider because it's almost cool... IMO

Plus it was voted the SUVOTY.

If you're just looking for something with good ground clearance and all wheel drive so you can park it over piles of snow, check out a Subaru Outback. The regular Outback is based on the Legacy, and the Outback Sport is based on the Impreza. They're like the normal car versions but they have raised suspensions, SUV tires, and SUV-lookin body cladding.

You can get an 01 or 02 Outback here for US$15K or less. If you need more cargo capacity, the Forester is also a good choice.

The Outback is actually a larger car than the Forester. The Forester is basically an Impreza that in addition to its suspension being raised also has a somewhat taller body. But the Outback/Legacy is a bunch larger in length and width and has more interior and cargo volume.

As far as I can tell the purpose of the Forester is to have something with a bit more of an SUV image than the Outback models which clearly look like cars that have been SUV-ified.

SUVOTY by Motor Trend is a joke. So is Car of the Year. Motor Trend is probably the biggest joke of a publication on the market today.
