Think of it like this, you are already tech support for her. You always will be.
If she weren't smart, you wouldn't help her at all. Have her get something put together, so she can help herself if/when things go wrong, and she'll call you second. Especially after she calls you the first time and you tell her "HEY... it's under warranty." But like boog said, It's going to depend on what it's going to be used for. Either way, have her go low-end and fill it up with ram so she can multi-task.

And this is coming from a Macintosh guy. lol

Man... I've been stuck helping a friend of the friend of the friend I helped when that time I helped my friend with his/her computer. The less I was there to help in the end, the better they got at helping themselves figure it out.

I concur, I built a pc for my aunt and now I'm tech support for her whole family cuz they all fuck up the PC. I fixed it 3 times so far cuz of viruses and shitty programs they installed. Now I told her free tech is over $50 look at it charge from now on plus hourly. I redid her system this time with an admin password and gave everyone else user accounts that can't install anything, tried to idiot proof it as much as I couldh:

i agree w/ everyone else about just calling dell. i have put together a few pcs for ppl & enevitably end up w/ the constant help calls. personally the warranty etc from dell is worth the small amount of savings possible from building it yourself from components.

that being said, in the next few months, i am going to build one for myself & will probably use the following place:

http://www.sysbuilder.com/mbbundles/amdathlonxp.htm

asus mobo
3400 processor
1gig ddr ram
all put together, burned in & fully tested
~$310

probably use the onboard video since my 42" plasma tv has pc inputs & onboard sound into the home theatre system
