Default snowy mountain driving

if you have a 4WD vehicle do you still need chains?
do most rental places (enterprise, etc) have chains available for free?

even with a 4wd chains can come in handy. 4wd doesn't mean you aren't gonna get stuck it just means you got 2 more tires gripping the road.

My dad has a 4x4 snow plow truck and usess chains on occasion to get that extra grip needed to push.

I do that drive all the time when I go skiing (well, not to Vail, Vail is too upscale h: ), never had a problem. Just don't drive like an idiot.

we were driving slow as hell.. i thought we were either a) going to slide off the road or b) blow off the road.
