snowy mountain driving
chains cant hurt but i never use em. but i do have a couple lengths of straight chain (maybe 12-18") in the back of my truck in case i get on a patch of ice, i can throw em down under the tires. that worked for me everytime, but since i got my interco's i dont really have a need for em

If you're renting, get a taurus or neon or other run-of-the-mill front driver, check the tires and drive carefully. Pretty much every modern car has ABS. AWD helps you get moving, but when you're on slick roads, all you really need to be concerned about is stopping, which AWD hinders via weight. [/no offense]

i asked about 4wd and chains, not about tahoes specifically
i'll be caravaning with a titan, either a new tacoma or pilot, and a wrx wagon
yes, enterprise has chains for their rentals if the area has severe snow. when you call up to make a reservation, tell them you need chains. or if you make your reservation online, call up the branch and tell them you need chains. if you give them some notice, you'll be all set. they'll even show you how to put them on.
