No I don't like censorship, that's why I choose not to live in China.

Google wants to do business there. The government there says that they have to do X or risk being completely blocked. Google obvisouly choose to do X as opposed to being blocked.

Censorship sucks.
Google is getting a ton more business.
It's snowing out.

wow.

edit: you don't think they are going to be censoring ALL of google do you? They are just censoring the china version of it. Yea if they were censoring ALL of google because of china, yea that would be fucked up. But they are just censoring what the chinese see, not the rest of us.

i suppose you've met some of these poor oppressed chinese families that are itching for the opportunity to revolt against the government? china does oppress people, and limit freedoms. but the lives of average citizens is improving substantially. towns considered rural in the 80s have becoming prosperous in the rising economy (that's not to say all of them, but there are many examples). the government is becoming less and less rigid, relaxing more and more of their restrictions (including censorship), and runs a capitalist economy. you're about twenty years out of date

edit: they've also introduced elections for local/regional government office

No I agree it sucks and I don't agree with Chinas laws either but it isn't the US.

I wish the world was equal all the way across the board in their countries laws, but then that would make for some pretty boring travel too.

well, my brother's wife is taiwanese. he's over there right now, actually. i also dated a taiwanese girl who spent much time in shanghai, and in fact her mother did the majority of her business there. so, no, technically i haven't met these poor oppressed families. and granted, the taiwanese tend to be pretty biased against the mainland chinese (at least the country), but i do believe i have a more direct line into information on the happenings there than the majority of americans get. so there!

Whatever. Google makes me happy. We use tons of products from China, so I cannot cast stones.

well i'm taiwanese, so meh h: my dad's company is now operating almost entirely out of china, too.

my parents' families are all pretty anti-china. but most taiwanese people are anti-china for reasons other than what you are suggesting.

many areas of china are rapidly changing. beijing may be a bastion of nationalistic pride and anti-anything-that's-not-china sentiment, but a lot of the chinese people are more modern than you think. the younger generation is embracing things like japanese, taiwanese and korean pop music and TV shows - which would have been totally unheard of and/or censored ten to twenty years ago. students everywhere are clamoring to learn english. criticism of the former chinese president, Jiang Zemin, is actually allowed! why do you think the chinese auto industry is so large? because people can afford to buy cars. the US is even threatened by this...

while they still have a LONG way to go, china is changing. i agree, it sucks that google has to bend over in order to do business in china, but that's just how it is. people can whine all they want about this, it'd be suicide if google didn't setup shop in china, and you can bet that they won't be the last.

How exactly is censoring something "unethical"? Because American's deem it to be? They probably see our lack of censorship as a lack of morality so who the fuck cares.

i'm not sure about all of the things they censor, but china is known for blocking subjects that are politically "sensitive" to the government. eg, the tiananmen square massacre, falun gong, taiwan independence, tibet... these are entirely political, not moral issues.

Yes, they censor it. Here in the US we just eavesdrop for it!
