china does oppress people, and limit freedoms. but the lives of average citizens is improving substantially. towns considered rural in the 80s have becoming prosperous in the rising economy (that's not to say all of them, but there are many examples). the government is becoming less and less rigid, relaxing more and more of their restrictions (including censorship), and runs a capitalist economy. you're about twenty years out of date
