So I'd like to get a new head unit, I've got a cheap sony explod right now

Which head unit would you suggest that is around or below $300?

I was looking at the Alpine CDA-9851

That one is really good. I'm not sure if you'd want to pony up for the upgraded display, but it's well worth it.

 

i want to get the alpine hu with the glide touch

i have a sony too, got it 5 years ago for like $350+ off ebay, works great, i love it

 

What model has the upgraded display? I'm guessing the Alpine CDA-9853?

I would go premier if you go pioneer. I have run 3 pioneer premiers in my cars...started with the 730MP, then the 740 (got stolen) then upgraded to the 750 right now. They are VERY powerful head units. I wouldn't leave out of the pioneer family.

I am tempted to soon upgrade to the in-dash navi unit by pioneer.

Can't go wrong with either Alpine or Pioneer...I'd get the Alpine, but I have a slightly biased opinion
