His argument is to just look at offensive stats and that's that. This quote below he may believe is right and may have been accurate in some past MVP choices, but it is not the case w/ A-Rod. A-Rod had an amazing defensive year. I am not saying hold that against Ortiz, but it should be something that is looked at above and beyond A-Rod's offensive numbers.

Half the players at a given position are above average. Half are below average. If you're below average, your defense — as measured against the rest of the league — is hurting your team. Manny Ramirez's defense ranges from serviceable to indifferent to atrocious. One thing it never is: above average. Yet if he won a Triple Crown, his defense would not be held against him. Merely walking out onto the field every day earns MVP candidates a check in the defense box.
This quote about defense not playing a part in offensive numbers is correct. But to say that defense doesn't count then makes the MVP to the MVB (Most valuable batter).

His argument was not that defense does not count, he is saying that if a person is a horrible fielder (Manny for instance) that should be held against them. Simply putting a glove on should not increase your MVP value.

But I really like his arguments about who would Yankee fans want and who would Red Sox fans want in a clutch situation. Coupled that with it was Martinez and Giambi that carried the Yankees at times this year and not AROD.

AROD is the best all around player in the league...that does not necessarily make him the most valuable. There is a difference.

In that case, give the MVP to the bat boy, cause without him, they would not get their bats, and bats would be strewn about the backstop.

ok and my argument is that for a great fielder you cannot overlook that. It is not just an offensive award.

Hench clearly states that if you are a good fielder it helps you. In AROD's case his fielding does.

SD is screwed. If they were in the Wildcard hunt, they would have finished 10 games behind Houston.
