Sushi lovers... do you know sushi etiquette?
maki, nigiri, or sashimi.. I love it all. But youve never really had sushi till youve had it in japan. at one place I paid $6 for 2 pieces of uni (sea urchin) man that stuff was good.
As for ettiquette theres no real wrong way. Its not like an art form like tea ceremonys or anything. In japan theres so many different methods of eating it. taking the fish off the nigiri and dipping the fish alone before eating, turning the nigiri upside down to get the sauce only on the fish before eating, and even pouring the sauce directly on the fish.
For the roll type (maki) some people again pour sauce on top, some let it sit in the small dish of sauce, some people just dip it. you also see some people mixing wasabi into the soy sauce, and others who put a bit of wasabi directly on the roll before eating.
As a rule of thumb if theres sauce aleardy on it then you wouldnt put soy sauce on it.
I wish I could find some shako here in the states.Ive never seen it here atleast in colorado.
also not all sushi is raw. There are alot that are cooked or partially cooked.

All the crab rolls are cooked, shrimp is cooked. Move up from there. Honestly, it's delicious.

on that show it was saying that soy sauce is a added flavor, your sushi is not to be 'soaked' in it. its just for "A LITTLE" falvor inhancement...
your not to leave a pool of soy sauce in ur dish when finished.

never pass things to another person chopsticks-to-chopsticks. if you're passing something to someone else (like a piece of fish, etc), put it on their plate or offer your plate to them.
amen! sushi in america is nothing compared to what you can get in japan.. and i think you're right, you're supposed to dip the fish or whatever is on top in the soy sauce. this is purely to enhance the flavor. the soy sauce is supposed to flavor the main ingredient, not the rice. i don't think it's an etiquette issue.
that's not always true. i guess i could be wrong about this, but there are some that are meant to be savored and not just devoured in one chomp. edit: but you are never supposed to put down a half-eaten piece of anything.
as mentioned, there i don't think there is really a right or wrong way to eat it. when i was i japan, tho, the restraunt owners did tell me to just use my hands for some of em.
...only if it's made with fake crab meat
