In-game advertising is unacceptable...
you pay $50 for a game, and in some cases (MMORPGs), you continue to pay a monthly subscription, yet that's not enough for those greedy jerks out there. now we're forced to have advertisements splashed in our faces while gaming.

any serious gamer should definitely have a read. it's shocking what kind of information is being sent back to these in-game ad companies.
anyway, there is a way to block at least one of the offenders. i currently don't own any games that do dynamic in-game ads, but best to be prepared.

In order to prevent this 'functionality', the server can be prevented from being contacted by placing the following lines in either /etc/hosts on UNIX, or %WINDIR%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts on Windows.
Code:
127.0.0.1 madserver.net 127.0.0.1 ad.madserver.net 127.0.0.1 imp.madserver.net 127.0.0.1 media.madserver.net

Being a one-way hash, there is no easy way to find the contents of the message.

This isn't very new either. I remember seeing wolfenstien ads in doom 1 :dunno:

its a good idea in marketing, and at the same time really annoying to game players who don't have an option. I can see 2 levels of games...a cheaper, w/ ads version and a regular priced Ad Free version.
