I have to agree with Bonzo and Reno on this one -- this is clearly a move to set herself up as the "values" candidate for whatever office she runs for next. The most irritating part of this is that her way of positioning herself on the issue coincides with decreased freedom in the marketplace and in my life. Kids don't need the government to protect them from inappropriate material -- they need their parents.

Also, anyone who complains that these sex scenes are damaging to a kid but says nothing about the violence in the game is full of shit.

Welcome to America, where children can watch animated violence on TV all day but god help you if you show them a naked tit.

I think that is the most profoundly true thing you have ever posted, that I have read anyway.

Isn't this talking about something that you have to download? How is it the fault of a games author if someone makes a mod that makes everyone naked, or bunny rabbits into porno chicks, whatever.

I dunno, both sides of the political spectrum have a long history of trying to censor one form of popular media or another.

The movie industry for the most part avoided this nonsense because it took a step to regulate itself before the politicos and everyone else could get a chance to impose some kinda crap on themselves.

The video game industry sort of did its thing with the ratings system but it's never really had the level of effectiveness as movie ratings.

The only thing the government can do is provide parents with the tools for making decisions about what their kids can see, play, listen to, whatever. For the most part those tools are out there. Movies and video games have ratings. Music has parental advisory labels. TV has a ratings system and the v-chip for locking out programs that parents don't want their kids to see.

I know I see commercials all the time from the cable company and whoever else showing exactly how to program parental locks. The tools are there. So if parents give a shit about what their kids see on tv then they can do whatever they feel like with the locks.

But really, why not just leave it up to parents to be irresponsible with their kids if they want to? The ratings are there and if they want to pay attention to them they can. My own parents used the ratings. Hell I distincly remember the ordeal I had to go through to get them to let me buy Mortal Kombat.

But there's plenty of other parents who like to buy their ten channels of HBO, Cinemax and whatever else and just let their kids watch whatever the hell they want. Okay so maybe those kids heard some cuss words, saw some people get killed, or got to find out how great a thing boobs are a little earlier than maybe they should have, but in the end are those kids really messed up in the long run?

Because the evil video game company made a game that could be modified into something more evil. h:

Maybe she should just be complaining about the fact that in the standard game you can still kill people in various ways and pick up hookers, if not necessarily see them in action?

Or maybe just use a whole bunch of examples of these games that deserve the M rating and put it on the stores to actually enforce the ratings? If the parents want to buy the game for their kids then that's up to them. But if some kid walks into a store and wants to buy an M-rated game then they should need to be a proper age or have mommy there to buy it for them. Seems simple enough to me.

does anyone ever notice that EVERYONE says it's the parents fault. the problem here is when something happens people are so self concious these days they dont want to be seen as bad parents and blame the government.

and now basically it's like your older sister/brother acting like an asshole and breaking something, blaming what they bought and now you cant have one (think cellphone, crasha car.. etc.)

To be fair I do think that GTA: SA is more deserving of an AO rating than M.
