This type of crime seems to be drug related, someone needing money fast.
A car thief would have broken in without obvious damage.
That goes against what has happened to me, and everyone else I've known to have their belongings stolen out of a vehicle.
In fact, my vehicle was unlocked -- they broke the passenger window anyway, and very nicely and neatly removed my amp, speakers, stereo, mounting unit, and all of my CD's except for "System of a down - Steal this album."
I agree, it sounds like a smash-n-grab for some quick money -- but don't assume your professional car theif or car buglar won't break things to get in. Most of the time they don't care.
It was probably a bum who was looking for money or booze.
That's what the cop that took down the report speculated as well.

$500. The window that was broken would've cost about 230 installed (this is for the smallest window on the car). But the guy that installed the new window got a used one for 140.
