That goes against what has happened to me, and everyone else I've known to have their belongings stolen out of a vehicle.

In fact, my vehicle was unlocked -- they broke the passenger window anyway, and very nicely and neatly removed my amp, speakers, stereo, mounting unit, and all of my CD's except for "System of a down - Steal this album."

I agree, it sounds like a smash-n-grab for some quick money -- but don't assume your professional car theif or car buglar won't break things to get in. Most of the time they don't care.
