Yeah, I am going to do that from now on. Everytime a computer crashes, I tell myself to start backing stuff up, but it never happens. This was especially devastating, so I am going to pick up another hard drive just for back up purposes.

That directory no longer exists. My documents where everything important was saved is wiped out and empty.

I am going to just reformat it right to get rid of the errors and reinstall everything.

uh i think you're confused. he mentioned losing all his music mp3's etc...

taking drive out + putting the HD into another computer, then transfering all those mp3's/misc. files would have saved them

did u get a message that said"we appologize for the inconvenience but windows could not start properly..ect"? if u did then you could of selected "Last Know Good Configuration" if that didnt work then move on to the recovery console which is that That MS-DOS screen ur talking about..at the propmt you should have typed this chkdsk /r and it would of most likely repaired the problem if that didnt work then you

should of moved on to a repair installation its simple at the first screen you see where it says press R to repair or ENTER to setup you could of pressed enter then F8 to agree to the EULA then the next screen select R to repair...

I couldn't get to that screen. As soon as the bios was done with it's thing and windows should have launched, the message popped up.

It also didn't recognize the windows installation currently on there when I tried to do the repair thing, so I really messed it up.

That is what I was planning on doing.

Another question:

I am a little fuzzy to the adding of a hard drive after windows has been installed. I know I have to go into BIOS and make sure everything is working right and then what? Should it format the drive in windows or do I have to do that separately in setup?

As long as the drive is recognized in the BIOS, you can format it once Windows boots. Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Disk Management.
