Default All you computer saavy...

My computer took a shit on me today after I dusted it out. When I rebooted it, it gives me an error that says:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."

So, I went to the repair mode in XP setup and ran a check disk on both drives and it still does it. The only way I can figure to fix the problem is to reformat and reinstall windows.

If anyone can spare me a reformatting (and losing all my files), I would greatly appreciate it since I am a bit computer retarded in this area.

windows xp allows you to install w/o a reformat. it just copies over windows files, and keeps all non windows files in tact

Yes, I did. When you press "r", it just takes you to an MS-DOS prompt, so it doesn't really help with anything. Check disk didn't do anything and I don't know what else would work since I am more MS-DOS retarded than anything. It was before my time. h:

OK, I just reinstalled windows and it works fine except I have lost all my music, pictures and misc shit. This really sucks. I guess I learned my lesson that if it isn't broke, don't fix it. h:

sounds like a memory issue. those are the most common causes for that error.

there is an article to help you through the "repair" below...

well.. why didn't you swap out the drive and back it up on another comp?

I would have recommended a reformat.. but i would have atleast backed up all the crap i needed first.
