Default Workout crew?

Any basic stuff I should know before going in the weightroom? I've started lifting and I want to make sure I'm not doing anything wrong.

Do you have any experience at all in lifting? Do you know proper form for the exercises you are doing? Proper form is key, otherwise you can seriously hurt yourself. There are plenty of books I can recommend to you to learn a lot about the fundamentals of lifting. If you have any specific questions post them up.

Don't be a jerk. If you're not gonna give advice, get out of the thread. The workout crew is here to help fellow workout people, not pick on a new lifter. You probably don't even lift so get out. h:

Make sure you use proper form, or you'll end up hurt.
Skip at least a day before working out the same muscle group again.
Don't start too heavy, too soon...you'll be hurting.
Drink lots of water.

If I have any specific questions I'll ask, just wondering if you have any tips for beginners or a good all around workout.

if you want to get bigger use a pyramid workout, 8-6-4-(2 sometimes) reps and if you're doing it right it should be hard to get the last one through the motion, it may take you a while to find the weight but dont just throw a whole heap on there to start with. and i find it nice to have someone to goto the gym with because it helps you stay motivated to go on the days you may be feeling a little lazy and you nearly always have a spot

Stretch. Most people overlook stretching before working out.

If that answers your question...

It's at school so its not bad. How long before I get results, apperance wise and strength wise? I've probably cut my calorie consumption in half because I've always overeaten and I am running with the track team. I am 6'7" 260 lbs and kind of overweight. I just want to get stronger and lose weight. I've never been too happy with either. Should I feel totally beat after a workout?

A lot of people react differently to different training methods. One of my friends is on a sustained workout program, in which he is lifting moderate weight for 2 hours a day, 5 days a week. I think his method overtrains the body, which pretty much just causes a lot of fatigue, but if it works for him then good for him I guess. It wasn't so good for me when I tried it. I am on a high-intensity program, which shortens workout times to about 45 minutes. However I lift more weight with less reps to promote gains in mass.

I say just try different routines and see what works for you. 6'7"/270 is huge. I'm sure you're already pretty strong so you shouldn't have trouble putting up big numbers. Like they say, less weight/more reps will give you definition. Maybe sticking with a weight that's neither too heavy nor too light will give you some nice mass without putting on too much weight. I dunno.

Keep running If you burn more calories than you take in, you will definitely lose weight.

However I've never been in your situation so I'm just tossing out ideas. Ask the local buff guys at your gym. More often than not they will be happy to give you advice with regards to nutrition, lifting techniques, etc.

Good luck mate
