Nah... I think they're most likely sneeze spots h:

nah...i dont close my laptop at all anymore. On this new one, it shuts my computer off, so i just leave it open all the time...

Chances are, the micro fiber cloth won't be able to draw the smudges out without some kind of liquid to help aid it. You get one side a little wet and wipe the screen with it, then use the other side (dry) to catch all the leftover stuff. I go to a PC board and that was what they recommended when I asked the same question, and it worked just fine too.

she didn't say anything about smudges. just small spots.

and good microfiber cloth (such as one for eye glasses) will remove smudges.

do you read? she said when the screen is dark, as in black pixels are being displayed. she didn't say anything about the laptop being turned off.
