technics and roland are typically the best and most expensive. yamahas are way overpriced and are pretty much not worth it. if you're not looking to pay for a technics or a roland, casio makes keyboards that are a lot nicer than yahama, much less expensive, and feel a lot better. the keys feel great (MUCH better than yamaha), and the right models will have keys that are weighted/damped differently as you move up the keyboard (forgot what this feature is called). on a normal piano, the higher keys are supposed to be much lighter, and there is supposed to be no damper on the highest keys. the lower keys are heavier. they attempt to recreate this feel in some of their digital pianos. yamaha does it too, but only with their higher end models. yamaha keyboards aren't bad, but they're too expensive. even their higher end models can't compete with the casio's, tho.

my brother was shopping for a digital piano for a couple months, so i got to try out a lot of them. he ended up buying a used roland.

around $1400, if i remember correctly. i'll have to double check on the model, but it's supposed to be around $1800. he got it so he could pick up piano again. we both played piano growing up, clear through high school. he was a lot more into it, tho. played in school jazz bands and such... since he moved out, he didn't have access to a piano. the one he got has a lot of features beyond a basic digital piano. it has some recording-studio type features, like being able to record multiple tracks (on the piano), midi in and out, and others. it's also less of a piece of furniture, as some digital pianos are. i think it's more of a stage/recording studio instrument. it didn't come with a nice looking stand built in, no music stand, etc. but it sounds and feels awesome.

one sales person told us that technics is actually going out of business. i'm not sure if this is true at all. it would really be a shock because they make the best digital pianos in the world, and everyone knows it. but they are ridiculously expensive... if it is true, maybe you can find some closeouts in a couple months?
