the best handgun is the one that feels the best in your hands and you can control the best.

go to the range with some spare money and rent a few handguns after feeling some in your hands to see which one YOU prefer.

9x17mm Kurz/Browning/.380ACP
9x18mm Makarov
9x19mm Luger/Parabellum/NATO
9x20mm Browning Long (obsolete)
9x21mm (rare)
9x22mm (.357 SIG)
9x23mm Largo (obsolete)
.38 Special
.357 Magnum

...and that's only the ones I can remember.
you should know that if someone is looking for a "9mm" they're not going to know that there are many flavors. they want the mainstream (not that that's bad) 9x19

Its generally accepted that if someone says "9mm," they're talking about a 9x19 Parabellum. Your average person/novice shooter is not going to know about all of those other variations

By the way, do you know what size of a 9mm you want? Do you want something full size, something compact, something for concealed carry? If you let us know what size frame you're looking for, we can point you in the right direction for what to look at.

Thats the best advice you'll get.

First question, what are you using it for? Just to have a gun to go shooting occasionally, or to carry. There are a lot of nice weopons out there.

IMHO, the Airwweight S&W .38 is the best to carry, compact, shrouded hammer, revolver so their will be no jams. That is what I bought for the wife to carry, after extensive research.

If it is for home defense, buy a shotgun, not a pistol

That's the unfortunate thing. 9x19mm Parabellum is a great cartridge, but asking for the "best 9mm" is like asking "what is the best car under 3k pounds?"

Did this guy disappear on his own thread?

BTW, completely off topic. Do any of you guys own guns that are finicky? I was shooting my PPK/S yesterday, and I've noticed that when I shot the Federal Hydra-shocks that I carry in it, it shot perfectly. I shot two boxes of American Eagle, and it was misfeeding every 4 shots or so. Then I put a box of Winchester target ammo through it and not one misfeed for the whole box. Anyone else have a weapon that is like that...that it only likes certain types of Ammo?

Some guns are finicky like that, mine's not really - some reloaded ammo I bought had a nose dive or two, out of 500 rounds but hey, if you can do fine with the W.whitebox ammo, thats the cheapest stuff out there

actually come to think of it, I did have 3-4 failure to feed when I had 600 rounds of American Eagle.

try polishing your feed ramp, seemed to fix my problem.
