Can I run RAID0 using only 1 physical hard drive that has 2+ partitions on it? Obviously the motherboard is equipped with RAID features, but I'm wondering if I have to have 2 physical drives to do this.

You need 2 phyisical drives.

 

damit... that's what I thought. Do they have to be identical to one another or can I use say one IDE 30 GB and one SATA 80 GB?

I'm nearly positive they have to be the same. :happysad:

 

The sizes don't have to be the same. However the smaller sized one will determine the volume size. So if you use a 30GB and an 80GB, the volume will only be 60GB.

 

I believe they both have to be SATA drives. I don't think you can RAID with one IDE and one SATA.

 

If you do w2k or xp software raid you can.

 

Hmmm... ok. I've read the theories and what not on RAID, but never implemented it so I want to do it to learn. Maybe I'll have to pick up another SATA 80 GB to make this work. Thanks for the info.

and you lose the extra space on the bigger drive. unless you have a special raid controller that allows you to use the left over space. there is only 1 company in the world that allows you to do that.

Yes I work for them. However their current SATA and IDE products do not allow that. The newer sata products that are coming out will allow you to do this.

 

if you plan on booting from the RAID 0 you can't use windows software raid. chicken and egg problem you see
