You want one which has the most area under the curve. How exactly that is distributed is not quite as important, although any sudden dips or rises limit operating range.

This is true. But for maximum acceleration, you want to shift at peak HP and the RPMs to land at peak torque. A flat torque curve will make this the most possible.

Yes. And the ideal engine produces 1000 lb/ft of torque from 5 rpm to 50,000 rpm, gets 100 mpg, and only spits Febreeze out the tailpipe.

I'd say its easier to get a flat torque curve than do that.

People associate the term "torque" with low rpm. A motor can make a lot of torque at high rpm and be really crappy off the line.

Torque is force, horsepower is a calculation based on force and rpm.

So to modify your colloquialism, "low rpm torque gets you moving, high rpm horsepower keeps you moving."
well thats basically what i said i just didnt explain it

with any engine, you will always have more horsepower than torque above 5,252 rpm. if you dont believe me, look at any dyno graph. the hp and torque lines cross at 5,252 rpm. that is because hp is calculated from torque. you cant measure hp.
