do you think this has anything to do with the market getting saturated with them in the first few years? i mean 50000 + in the first year is an impressive number for a car like that. a redesign would rekindle the celica love and i think there would be a new spike in sales...
rather than rolling over to acura, they should compete.
Most Celicas are GTs, which have only 140 hp. They're not very roomy inside and they have high insurance rates. Headroom with a sunroof is actually worse than my Miata with the top up.
There are a lot of reasons the Celica didn't sell well, one of the main ones is price. Toyota always sticks some combination of options on their cars, and the Celica GT with an automatic transmission and that options combo stickers at like $22k. That's a whole lot to ask when competing against the base RSX which is over $1000 less, and a bunch of other cheaper cars.
But hey I've already said all of this stuff in the N&R thread which was linked to.

i wouldnt see the tC and the Celica being THAT close of competitors at all.
Torque= Celica GT-S > tC
HP= Celica GT-S > tC
Weight= Celica GT-S > tC
im not sure about price though.
The GT-S is a tiny slice of Celica sales numbers, and the tC is way cheaper than even a stripped out GT which only exists in theory because Toyota always builds em with a bunch of options tacked on.
The tC gets you power everything, ABS, 160 hp, 17" wheels, the cool glass roof, nice stereo, and some other goodies, for $16,465. The only factory options are an automatic for $800 and side airbags for $650. A comparably equipped Celica GT manual stickers at $20,270.
When the two cars are in the same showroom, how many people do you think are really going to pop a couple grand more (assuming they're smart and get a discount) for the Celica?
edit: A GT-S 6-speed with the minimum level of options that Toyota tacks on at the factory stickers at $25,710.

Just because theres more GT's than GT-S's doesnt mean you forget about he GT-S. It's still there adn its still a Celica...and it still beats the Scion as far as HP, Torque and Curb Weight.
The headroom between the Celica and the tC differ's by barely an inch...wow.
And while comparing the RSX-S and the GT-S is fair according to performace and looks...it's stupid to compare the price. OBVIOUSLY the RSX-S is going to be cheaper. That's what Honda is known for. The 2 have competed very well...but around THIS area, the Celica beats the RSX as well. People are drawn more to it than the RSX...and the same will hold true for the tC as well.
