Okay, but "right" and "left" arbitrarily describe a direction relative to the axis. How do you tell the alien which is which?

by giving coordonates, (1,1) is right while (-1,1) is left....as you said the aliens in questions would understand that...

benjamin... very good correlation. I really dont' think vocabulary is the problem; my vocabulary in english is better than most. I think is just a matter of concepts for which no word has yet been devised...

obviously you can beat around the bush and come up with loose associations and unrooted metaphors, but the problem eventually arises: there are thoughts that cannot be articulated in language. You think in language. There are inaccessible thoughts that can only be found via an expansion in language or a breakthrough in articulation... neither of which am I more than modestly capable of. therefore, my thought is limited by language. I don't know that everyone thinks in language, but I sure as hell do.

I've obviously repeated the problem incorrectly. It is supposed to be intractable to make a point about arbitrary names for variables in programs, which is why it came out of a comp sci class and and not a philosophy class.

And that's why learning multiple languages at a young age is good.
