Default How to wheel-n-deal at a new car dealer?

I'm looking to buy a Mazda3 GT in about a month, and I want to know how can I can best work the salesman on price.
The car stickers for $23,500 (canadian, before tax), so should I:

-say "what kinda deal can we make?" and leave it up to him?
-lay down a non-low-ball number and see what he says?
-other option?

I plan on dropping $12.5 cash, so I'll finance the rest...any help?

Dont act too interested in the car. Its not a price-point car meaning theres usually lots of room for negotioations. Ensure the salesman can see you're interested but dont overdo it, yet maintain that he/she also doesn't think your just wasting time and just want a test drive. If you go in and get to the point, "Hi there, I'm interested in a New Mazda 3 GT, can you be of assistance and let me look at one?" dont squander around browsing, etc.

your location says socal but you quote the canadan price

ive yet to see it in action but ive heard:
bring your gf along and have her act pissy like she doesnt want to be there, but youre there to buy a car today, the salesman will try to get your to buy
so advantage you
my friend told me about this and the salesman even bought pizza because she said she was hungry

someone else i know has a mother who can haggle like no other ive heard
i think she just stands firm and doesnt budge
she managed to get $5000 off a used 4runner a couple years ago from a toyota dealer

i found going to the dealership near the end of the month is effective (more willing to sell to up their sales for the month)

best advice i can give is, walk away if you aren't 100% satisfied with the price. that'll keep you from compromising too much.
