Default VW Quality?

I remember hearing that late 90's VWs had a ton of problems, but wondering if they've improved at all (my GF wants to buy a new Jetta). We went to test drive them and they seem ok. Discuss.

I have a 1996 GTI VR6. I had to give it to my brother because he got his 1997 Jetta GLX stolen that I bought for him

Anyways, the experience for both cars was very positive. The only problem I had with the GTI was the visor clip broke 2 times. The clutch return spring came off 2, third time they replaced the spring with a new one and that fixed it. The problem I had after warranty expired was the instrument cluster light died.

The driver side front wheel hub also had to be replaced last month. However that's with over 130K miles on the car now. Engine and tranny is still stong as ever and he has not had any other problems.

i would be weary of buying one. weve got a couple old VWs and theyre awesome, but until they can have a few years of good quality cars, i wouldnt purchase one. just my opinion. i love veedubs, but i just wouldnt risk it right now.

mechanically they are good, but some stuff dont hold up, usually the body looks kinda trashy asfter a few years. especially electrical stuff, just not the best electrical out there compared to the japenese.

late 90's VW electrical systems were pretty top of the line, they didn't have any real problems with that. Although Volvo is the company where electrical is not in it's dictionary.

I know a guy who bought a 2001 Golf, and it eats lightbulbs. Every week, some other light on the car burns out. That leads me to believe that there are some electrical gremlins in the car.

i can't get myself to like vw's.

they aren't that fast, they do look nice, but overall, i'm not that impressed by 'em.

it's mainly just my opinion.

in my experience, vw makes a very good car.

my gf has a 99 jetta GL and it hasnt given her any trouble.

her dad has a 92 passat 2.0 wagon and it has something like 215k or 220k and he still drives it... its lost a little bit of compression over the years but nothing that shouldnt be expected for a high mile older car.
