I tried it w/o the flash, but it was way too dark, and I only have a mini-tripod, and that was shot on my black bedsheets.... so no way to get stability on a matress... maybe i'll set it up again and reshoot w/o flash. I did notice the flash washout though

If you want to get serious about artsy shots then you might as well invest in a cheap full-size tripod. The heavier the better. Even if it's not super spiffy, it at least allows you to actually do proper low-light shooting.
